Marin, Massage Therapists and Chiropractic

Recently, I saw a Marin Groupon (for those not familiar with Groupon, it is an internet thing that offers deals on a variety of things) for a chiropractor in San Anselmo, which is where I live. (The office is in Corte Madera.) Perhaps for this reason, I got ticked off more than usual.

Why? The meat of the deal was based upon getting a massage, with an optional chiropractic exam. Hey, there's nothing wrong with massage, but it is in no way part of Chiropractic, and should not be associated with Chiropractic. (The reason why it is sometimes associated with Chiropractic is pure marketing.)

This whole massage-Chiropractic thing pulls Chiropractic deeper into the popular misconception that it is a pain relief thing, even a relaxation thing, and, so, a casual thing, as is massage. Bad enough that so many people think this. This is a particular problem in "New Age," mellow Marin. It is, in my opinion, an abomination for chiropractors to perpetuate this nonsense, especially in Marin.

Let's be clear. Chiropractors change lives, and save lives, by detecting and correcting Vertebral Subluxation, interference to the brain and the nervous system. It is this system that controls and coordinates everything in your body... every system, every organ, every tissue, every cell. Any interference with this vital communication takes away from health, allowing less function, and eventually disease to occur.

It's nice to have 50 minutes of relaxation from a massage now and again, but it is hardly in the same league with a chiropractic adjustment, let alone ongoing chiropractic care. So why should it be in the same office? And why should it be used to promote a chiropractic office?

What do you think?
